March was the coldest in 40 years and 30′s shattered May records in Mid-South

February Snow

It was cold in Charleston, South Carolina, Washington, DC, and Raleigh, NC, and we are in the middle of May 2013. I have been all three cities over the last 72 hours. The beginning of May was cold and windy, and that is an oddity to have an extended period of cold weather in the month of May. A warm up is expected by Wednesday, but let's review the winter and spring weather and the oddity for the Washington-Raleigh corridor in the experience of both seasons for 2012-2013 season. The somewhat mild winter was a tragedy for snow lovers, but March 13 was the change in the weather pattern. It has been mostly below normal in temperatures. Washington, DC did receive the first 1" snowfall on March 24. Sleet fell for several hours in Raleigh, NC on April 4. Raleigh recorded a record low of 39 degrees this morning. The first record for a low temperatures in 4.5 years. As the warm up begins, we may be wishing for cold weather if July 4th is a repeat of last year … [Read more...]

Simply Frigid Sunday: Saturday snow comes after a warm Friday

20130217-161104.jpg

The little hobbies of life are the avenues to capture our interest the most. Weather is a personal favorite. My family resides in North Carolina, and DC has a difficult time being on the Potomac to have accumulating snow except for the 2009-2010 season. North Carolina has even more issues being in the mid-south.  The snow had to overcome a spring like Friday and temperatures in the 40's up to the time the snow began in earnest less than an hour after rain moved into the area. North Carolina residences were excited to see the heavy snowfall but most of the accumulations was lost to the warm soil temps. The snow was heavier east of Raleigh where my family resides. The snow was moderate to heavy in the early afternoon on Saturday. The ground finally turns white and the snowfall accumulations in the local area was around 2.0" of a thick wet heavy snow and roads were beginning to become covered in slush. Then the snowfall intensity was greatly reduced as light snow fell from 4 pm … [Read more...]

East Coast Storm is late but with a huge bang

The DC metro has showers to the South and West with rain in the metro area over the next two hours. However, Central North Carolina is seeing heavy rains, booms of thunder, and flashes of lightning as a line of strong storms developed around 3 am along the I-95 corridor. The storms are moving North and West into Raleigh but storms are redeveloping over I-95 to replace the storms moving NW to Raleigh. This is in response to low pressure developing along the NC/SC coasts. This storm in January would have been a potent winter storm event for North Carolina north into the North East. Coastal Storms are the hurricane variable of winter in predictability. In the Spring of 1983, a mild winter was Dec-Feb period and I was a kid. We had one snow that changed to rain in Central North Carolina. It easier for snow to stick and cause issues in late November and early December because of the sun angle. Storm tracks make February and March register some of the biggest storms. After February 14, Snow … [Read more...]

East Coast Storm will bring chill and heavy rain

20120421-034906.jpg

Temperatures near 90 in DC on Monday, and the warm March in Virginia are going to change with a late April Coastal Storm. Sunday into Monday, Heavy Rain is expected with highs only in 50's for DC on Sunday and Monday to upper 50's to near 60 around Raleigh, NC. ABC 7 in Washington, DC makes reference to the rainfall deficit being around 5" for the year to date, and this rain is needed in the Mid-Atlantic even if comes with a late spring chill. … [Read more...]
