Museum of Natural Sciences’ new Nature Research Center during its 24-hour grand opening celebration this weekend. The lure of seeing what was behind the museum’s $56 million expansion kept a steady stream of visitors heading into downtown Raleigh. Museum officials said Saturday they came close to meeting their goal of 50,000 visitors during the 24 hours it was open. The museum reported 45,000 people came through the doors and another estimated 25,000 were part of the outdoor celebration. The first impression from many of Saturday’s visitors, some who had waited nearly an hour to get inside, was overwhelmingly positive. http://s0.2mdn.net/3633251/NAO_120416_RaleighPoolSpa_300x250.swf “I think it’s awesome,” said Devona Morgan of Raleigh, who came with her 11-year-old … [Read more...]

NC Legislatures: Voters clash over Amendment One, NC economic news gets worse

house-in-bertie

This criticism is directly at the current political leadership in the General Assembly in North Carolina, Democrat, Republican, Independent party affiliation would not make any difference in this criticism. For example,  Governor Beverly Purdue is a  Democrat, and my professional association goes back to 2001 with Lt Governor Beverly Purdue in providing teaching bonuses via corporate donation  for outstanding teachers in Wake County. My past experience was a pleasure and productive with the former Lt Governor. Governor Purdue did take office  in the middle of a financial crisis in the economy and state budget system. Decisions were made by Governor Purdue to slice a budget politically with negative impact to the citizens of this state. My experience was going to the Division of Motor Vehicles in a rural part of North Carolina with staff and no customers, and two weeks later was required to obtain a duplicate copy of identification in Charlotte, NC. My license was not given … [Read more...]

Taste of Summer in March…What about April Fool’s?

IMG_1014.JPG

Payback is the opportune word when discussing 80 degree plus warmth in March in Washington, DC and Raleigh, NC. What veracity does winter have left in the month of April? An October snow was the unexpected bite of snow and cold in New England. What about the Mid-Atlantic and Mid-South snowfall potential in the month of April? Along with a few snow pics of past seasons. I have pulled the data for the latest measurable snowfall in Washington, DC and Raleigh, NC. The data may surprise some individuals..... Raleigh, NC - The latest accumulating snowfall was 1.8" on April 18, 1983...... Washington, DC saw the latest measurable snowfall of .5 inches on April 28, 1898.... A little food for thought.... Sunday Snippet: RBC sign goes dark over Raleigh Skyline

20120304-071410.jpg

It is a rainy morning in Raleigh, NC, I was up early for a Sunday when I peered in the distance to the skyline to witness an oddity to behold. Two of the cities tallest towers were gleeming the dark before the dawn, but the gleeming lights were not a familiarity to Raleigh. The changing face of banking has brought two gigantic changes to the skyline. First, The huge Wells Fargo sign on the top of the form Wachovia Capitol Center in Downtown Raleigh is a mini sunset lighting almost 500 ft in the sky. The most dramatic change is the RBC sign being dark in the middle of brightly lit crown that graces Raleigh's tallest building.
