The European Debt Crisis may seem a world away for DC banking consumers, but the interconnected world of 2011 makes events in Europe impact life in America. The current risk to a European Debt Default does exist to the $2.7 trillion dollar money market portfolio in the United States. When the debt crisis was isolated to Greece, money market worries were isolated, but the debt contagion has spread throughout Europe. The investment of money market funds in European banks brings risk and exposure to an otherwise low risk investment vehicle. As a consumer, what do you need to look for to ensure safety in a current money market investment? 1) Money market funds in a bank or credit union are covered by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). This is not a guarantee as banks do offer money market funds not covered by the FDIC. Contact your local institution to inquire about coverage on money market accounts. 2) Money Market accounts with investment institutions as … [Read more...]

Shameless in America: Black Friday is marked with violence

black-friday-violence-shopping-2011.jpg

- This article will not be finished to completion as preciously planned. The fact is that the extended economic downturn has not changed the overall me society in our country. I am not an innocent saint as a participant in the me society. I AM GUILTY! My article title "Shameless in America" has all the cynicism that is prevalent from our political leadership in Washington, DC to my hometown in Eastern North Carolina. Cynicism has killed compromise in DC and the Southern Charm in my small hometown. The me focus and being cynical is my past. I love life and people, and I enjoy living life. I am placing my energy into another article titled The Happiest People Of My Lifetime. This article is about people who believed in unconditional love and lived in true happiness and characters were always welcomed by these individuals. In hour modern world, a google search or digital record is not available about their lives, but their influence is still alive inside people like myself. They … [Read more...]

Britain Stands at Forefront as Eurozone Slips Toward Collapse

20111128-010200.jpg

Britain scrambles as the debt crisis worsens in Europe. Britain is one of ten countries that does not use the Euro for monetary currency exchange, but the demise of the Euro would have insurmountable impacts on Britain and the Island Kingdom. Britain's fortunes are not easily decoupled from mainland Europe. History has seen aggressors of rival powers being the insurmountable threat, but this modern-day threat is economic as the collapse of the Euro would bring a harsh backlash to Britain. A debt contagion crisis to cripple government finances, 40% of British trade is with the Eurozone region, Foreign offices being overran by British citizens with no money and involved in civil disturbances, and a domestic banking system exposure in lieu of a European collapse. The unthinkable has become the thinkable in a potential total collapse of the Euro with global ramifications unimaginable as bank failures and civil unrest will be unprecedented in the history of humanity. Britain has stepped … [Read more...]

Nov. 28- Dec. 2: E*Trade, Black Friday, European Debt Drama

NW DC 17 St

The upcoming week will be filled with consumer banking news including subjects like E*E*Trade, Black Friday, and more European Debt Drama as the first full business week after the Thanksgiving holiday will be one to watch. First, E*Trade's stock has reached a doji according to TradersHuddle.com. Minimal variation is being experienced by the stock between the opening and closing price or indecision from buyer or seller on the direction of the stock. Earlier this month, E*Trade did decide to stay an independent entity. This decision may be the most prudent option for the company, but the investor community thought otherwise as the post announcement performance of E*Trade's stock was dismal. E*Trade's stock was $10.84 on Nov 8th, and the stock closed at $8.14 on Nov 25th. The company's story  is still evolving as the future of E*Trade will be determined by winning investors confidence in the future of the company. Second, Black Friday will be a story of importance for the … [Read more...]

DC Banks on the FDIC Troubled Bank List

Chevy-Chase-Trust-Building.jpg

Eight DC banks are still on the Unofficial Troubled Bank List as reported by calculatedriskblog.com. The banks are operating with headquarters (HQ) in the District of Columbia and metropolitan regions of Maryland and Northern Virginia. The official FDIC Troubled Bank List is confidential on the breakdown, but the editors of calculatedriskblog.com provide the unofficial troubled bank list. The list corresponds with the FDIC reporting a decrease in the troubled bank list to 844 from 865 for July - September of 2011, and first quarter decrease in the number of troubled banks in the United States since 2006. FDIC reports an increase in bank profits from $ 23.8 billion in the July-September 2010 to $35.4 billion in the same period of 2011. The majority of profits were realized with banks with $10 billion in assets and larger as this asset group accounted for $29.8 billion of the $35.4 billion in 3rd quarter profits. The same scenario can be viewed in the Troubled Bank List in the makeup … [Read more...]

Adderall shortage is linked to API shortfall

Adderall shortage is one example of medicine shortage facing US

The Adderall shortage is just one of many drugs in shortage list on the FDA website. This story has been developing over the last few months, but the one contributing factor is being overlooked in the drug shortage. The federal government does have a manufacture limit on Adderall production per year, and Shire made claims to its generic counterparts that the DEA informed Shire the annual limit was reached. However, I spoke with Dr. Robert Anthony about this situation. Dr. Anthony is a psychatrist in Bethesda, MD, and Dr. Anthony's comment on the drug shortage was an eye opener. " A major industrial accident in China has affected the API supply for Adderall" explained Dr. Anthony. API is the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient in medication, and 80% is manufactured in China and India with very infrequent inspections of foreign suppliers of API. A more disturbing thought is that China is involved in America's production of pharmaceuticals and a major industrial accident was a catalyst for … [Read more...]

Debt Committee failure is imminent as ideology wins

President Obama is silence on the Super Committee Crisis

Sunday night in Washington, DC is seeing light rain, mist, and silence overtake the city this evening after sunshine and mild temperatures of earlier. The weather is mimicking the reality of the city tonight as the last hours tick before midnight.  Midnight is the deadline for the Super Committee to have a final plan for $1.5 Trillion in debt reduction  to meet the November 23rd deadline, and the failure to meet this deadline will have profound consequences to every American and throughout the world.  The sunshine of hope was optimistic that the Super Committee would work toward a resolve to bring a start on the long and short term debt problem of  America, but the final hours bring forth wet blanket of cynicism and silence over the negotiations process.  No compromise is the work of this committee, and the  committee of 12 members are not meeting for a last attempt to bring resolution to their obligations to negotiate a debt deal. The committee has stopped communication stuck in … [Read more...]

Banks or Credit Unions: Five bank transfer tips for consumers

dwint.jpg

As a former financial services executive, my professional experience did include exposure to both commercial banks and credit unions. The diverse exposure to both industries does provide insight to the internal differences of technology and organizational structure when transferring a banking relationship. Consumers are exposed to many opinions about the best choice of institution to house a banking relationship, and opinion is irrelevant(i.e. my opinion) when information is a better tool to insure "a change will do you good". However, the following five tips should be explored in a comparison analysis of your current bank and a potential new bank or credit union. 1) Deposit Access to Funds Direct Deposit-Teller deposits, ATM deposits, Incoming Wire Transfers. Review current deposit activity for 6-12 months and current accessibility to funds and compare with prospective bank or credit union. Transactions include large dollar checks, crediting wire transfers, transfers into … [Read more...]

DC Consumer Banking Watch- Week of November 14-20th

220px-Etrade_financial_center_market_st_san_francisco

The upcoming week will have several news items to take notice as high impact to both the consumers and banking industry in the DC market. 1) Federal Home Administration (FHA) may run out of money, and require government bailout money . The government entity was the sole remaining lender to allow home purchases to consumers with less money upfront for a downpayment or credit scoring issues. How this bailout will affect the agency, the mortgage lending market, or consumer access to credit? The answer is yet to be determined. 2) E*trade did end the week as an independent entity but the decision did come at a heavy cost to the company's stock. E*trade is based in New York, but E*trade Bank is based in Arlington, VA with customer call center and operations center in the same facility. E*trade has $31 Billion in deposits with a substantial workforce in the DC market. The company's announcement not to sell was not the finality to the future of E*trade's presence in the marketplace. … [Read more...]
